How to host a Eurovision party to remember from drinking games to fancy dress ideas

The classic stay-at-home Eurovision Song Contest party is a mainstay of the glitzy annual event for so many of us.

Seriously, other than actually being at the Liverpool Arena itself this Saturday, what better way to join in the fun than by inviting a load of buddies around your gaff and laughing/singing/wincing along?

This year sees Mae Muller flying the flag for the UK with her ditty "I Wrote a Song" - and she's sure got some big boots to fill after Sam Ryder's sensational second place at last year's competition. House parties across the nation will be cheering her on, with millions more watching around the world.

The last time the UK hosted the competition was back in 1998 - so to celebrate the event returning to these shores why not pull out all the stops and send YOUR house party into the stratosphere this weekend?

The secret to success, of course, always lies in the preparation, so if you're willing to put in a smidge more effort with your bash, read on!

Just be careful with that feather boa while you're preparing the food...

Set the right theme

Of course the overall theme is Eurovision, but that can often be both a little vague and far-reaching for party guests to latch onto. It's far better for visitors to choose a particular country - or year - and rock up dressed accordingly.

Rise Like A Phoenix star Conchita, from back in 2014, would be a fabulous choice, or if you're feeling particularly adventurous the Finnish death metal band Lordi from 2006 could be a goer. Just be careful the masked 'Hard Rock Hallelujah' hitmakers don't scare the kids!

If that sounds a little too much, you can always bring a lorra lorra laughs along for Liverpool with all your guests dressing up as Eurovision stalwarts, Abba. This is likely, of course, to instigate a mass singalong of Waterloo. But that's no bad thing.

Start off with a game

Eurovision being Eurovision there will be some appalling musical acts to navigate. As a result, Smartblend has come up with a fantastic drinking game to help get you through it all. They recommend you drink responsibly and stick to low alcoholic beverages to keep it light-hearted and fun.

During the performances

Take a sip from your drink if:

  • The presenter makes a bad joke

  • An innuendo is used

  • The language changes mid song

  • Lasers are used

  • Anytime a woman performer has her bum on show

  • Anytime a male performer is wearing a vest

  • A wind machine is used

  • You see a rainbow flag

  • There's a saxophone solo

  • There's a rapping part of the song

  • Someone takes a selfie on stage

  • Someone removes an item of clothing

  • The performances includes fake rain

During the scoring

Take a sip if:

  • Greece and Cyprus give each other 12 points

  • France uses the Eiffel tower as its backdrop

  • Anyone thanks Liverpool for a wonderful night

  • Anyone is wearing glitter

  • Somebody sings before giving their score

Make sure there's plenty of food

To really hammer home the Eurovision theme, why not serve up some snacks 'n' treats from the contest's main five participating countries? Try the suggestions below and feel free to add in some twists of your own.

UK: Pork pies, sausage rolls, digestive biscuits

Spain: Cured meats, peppers, stuffed olives

Italy: Pizza, ice cream, paninis

Germany: Bratwurst, salami, schnitzel

France: Cheese and crackers, French fries, vol-au-vents
